The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is participating in a National Surveillance Study documenting the presence or absence and distribution of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). This is a disease that affects the brain and nervous system of deer and moose, in Connecticut.
To test for this disease, samples are taken from the deer or moose head (tonsils and brain stem). The project was initiated in 2003 and currently over 1,800 deer heads have been tested. So far, this disease has not been found in Connecticut.
The DEP is requesting assistance from sportsman's clubs. Currently, they are collecting samples from road kill and hunter harvested deer. If you would like to donate the head of your harvested deer for CWD testing, please call either of the phone numbers below. Donated heads will be picked up as promptly as possible, usually within one business day. They are sampling only adult and yearling deer. No fawns please.
